Afcon Qualifiers: ‘Kenya and Tanzania can get maximum points from remaining matches’ – Williamson

The British tactician concedes the games will be tough but exuded confidence that the East Africans will win the matches to advance Former Kenya head coach Bobby Williamson has conceded it will be tough for Harambee Stars and Tanzania in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Harambee Stars are in Group G of the qualifiers with three points coming from the four games they have played. Kenya found themselves in a difficult position in the qualifiers after a 1-1 draw against Comoros in Nairobi and a 2-1 loss in Moroni in November. Taifa Stars are in Group J for the race to Cameroon with four points from as many matches and need maximum points in the remaining games to seal their place in the finals.

Rohr adds two more players to Super Eagles squad for Benin, Lesotho games

Genk striker, Paul Onuachu has been called up to the Nigeria national team, for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho. Onuachu was a shock exclusion from the original 24-man list released earlier this month. The 26-year-old could only make the standby list, despite his fine displays for Genk this season. However, Onuachu has now been added to the squad, along with Henry Onyekuru. Onuachu has been extended an invitation but Moses Simon and other Super Eagles stars in France are to miss the encounter due to the country’s COVID-19 protocol. “Following the uncertainty regarding the availability of players based in France [due to COVID 19 laws guiding the country], Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has extended an invitation to KRC Genk str...

Ibrahimovic Ends five-year international retirement

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has come out of his five-year international retirement and will play for Sweden again this month. The 39-year-old who is his country’s record goalscorer, has been named in his latest squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Kosovo. Ibrahimovic netted 62 times in 116 matches for Sweden before retiring after their group stage exit at Euro 2016. The AC Milan striker had offered hints of coming out of retirement recently, as a meeting with coach Janne Andersson suggested he was willing to return. Andersson said: “When Zlatan opened up for games in the national team, it felt natural and important to meet and discuss this as soon as possible. “I am glad that we managed to get a meeting so quickly.”

Chelsea Goalkeeper, Kepa Suffers Another Major Setback

Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, has suffered another major setback on Monday after he was snubbed by Spain ahead of this month’s international break. Kepa, who is currently behind Edouard Mendy in Chelsea’s choice of goalkeepers at Stamford Bridge, was not invited by Spain coach, Luis Enrique, for their World Cup qualifiers against Greece, Georgia and Kosovo. The 26-year-old has been regularly called up despite usually playing second fiddle to Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea, but this time he has missed out. However, Enrique instead included Brighton’s Robert Sánchez and Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simón in the list ahead of Kepa. Spain’s squad against Greece, Georgia and Kosovo: Goalkeepers: De Gea, Robert Sánchez, Unai Simón Defenders: Pedro Porro, Eri...

Ex footballer, Finidi George faults coach Gernot Rohr over AFCON qualifiers squad

Former Super Eagles player, George Finidi, has faulted coach Gernot Rohr's squad list for Nigeria’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho. On Tuesday, March 9, the German coach released a 24-man list that included Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, who has been without a club since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr last October. Genk striker Paul Onuachu, who has scored just once in seven appearances, has failed to replicate his club form for the national team. For his club, he has scored 26 goals with three assists in 30 games across all competitions. Speaking with Punch, George Finidi admitted that Musa is a quality player who has done a lot for the country but should not be on the list on the basis of form or fitness. The 49-year-old f...

AFCON Qualifiers: Rohr Under Fire Over Players Invited for Benin, Lesotho Games

Former Super Eagles winger, George Finidi, has criticized coach of the national team, Gernot Rohr, over the list of players invited for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho. Finidi, who specifically singled out captain Ahmed Musa, said players who are not playing regularly should not be invited ahead of those who are fit. He further questioned why Paul Onuachu does not get game time in the national team despite his form for his club. “Coaches should be made to defend their list when they come up with names that are questionable. Coaches should not be left alone. “They should be made to explain how they arrived at certain decisions on who they invite. Journalists should question the names on the list,” Finidi said accordi...

Serie A: Gernot Rohr Spills Discussion with Osimhen on Gennaro Gattuso

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed his discussions with Nigerian frontman, Victor Osimhen about his manager at Napoli, Gennaro Gattuso. Osimhen joined Napoli in a record-breaking deal last season after a top performance at Lille, that saw him score over 20 goals. Napoli is having a poor run of form and is currently sitting outside the top four mounting pressure on Gattuso. And the Nigerian striker has struggled in his first season at Napel due to fitness issues Appearing on Radio Kiss Kiss, Rohr, who is preparing his team for the Nations Cup qualifiers against the Benin Republic and Lesotho, said, “Gattuso is a good coach and Victor told me he trusts him a lot and what he’s teaching him. I think he can get results already this season. “Unlucky se...

AFCON Qualifiers: Benin, Lesotho games won’t be easy for Super Eagles – Jay Jay Okocha

Nigerian football star, Austine Jay Jay Okocha has advised the Super Eagles to remain focused as the remaining games against Benin and Lesotho in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers won't be walkovers. The three-time AFCON champions will face the Squirrels of Benin on March 22 before hosting the Crocodile of Lesotho on March 30. Nigeria tops Group L with eight points while Benin sits second on seven points and Lesotho has 2 points. A win for the Super Eagles against Benin will seal qualification to the bi-annual tournament in Cameroon. However, Okocha has warned the team not to be complacent. “Well, no game is easy these days, we have beaten them by 4-2 in the past doesn’t mean that it will be easy this time around, we are the only ones that can make it easy for ou...

Rohr Reacts as West Brom Snub Ahmed Musa

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has expressed confidence that captain Ahmed Musa will find a new club soon, after his proposed move to West Brom fell through. Musa is currently a free agent, after leaving Saudi club Al Nassr in October 2020. After visiting the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos ahead of next month’s 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho, Rohr assured that the 28-year-old will be back to his best soon. “It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out at West Brom, but I believe Musa will find another club soon,” Rohr told BBC Sport Africa. “He has the ambition to get back as quickly as he can to play football again at club level. “Musa made a great impact for us in big matches like against Iceland in Russia, that is a rem...
