Japan lifts virus emergency for most regions

Japan's prime minister on Thursday lifted a state of emergency imposed due to the coronavirus for the majority of the country but kept it in place for top cities Tokyo and Osaka. After fears the virus could explode in Japan, new infections have come down sharply, enabling the government to end the measure in 39 out of 47 prefectures before it was due to expire on May 31. But with new cases still emerging daily in Tokyo, Osaka and the northern island of Hokkaido, Shinzo Abe told reporters in a televised news conference that the state of emergency would be kept in place for those regions. "If possible, before May 31, we would like to lift the state of emergency for the other regions as well," he said. "It's going to be a long road ahead," Abe warned, asking residents to continue ...

Fearful Of Coronavirus Return, Beijing Turns Into Virtual Fortress

Beijing has virtually walled itself off to outsiders with drastic measures to protect China’s seat of power against the threat of a second wave of coronavirus infections from other regions. After largely getting the outbreak under control, China has banned foreigners from entering the country as authorities fret over an increase in cases imported from abroad — though most have been Chinese citizens. But Beijing has gone a step further, imposing a strict 14-day quarantine on people arriving from other parts of China, regardless of whether they test negative for COVID-19 — a measure not required in other cities. Beijing, of course, is not like any other Chinese city. The ruling Communist Party postponed its once-a-year congress, known as the “two sessions”, in March and experts s...

Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has disclosed that they suspended consideration of President Buhari's $22.7bn loan request over the reported sidelining of the south-east. The House leader disclosed this when he hosted Leaders of Faith Forum from the south-south and south-east in Abuja on Wednesday March 18. Gbajabiamila stated that though the federal government believes the loan is important, all regions ought to be captured in the spending plan. He said; “If government believes that there’s need for the loan, I think we should support that, because they know as they’re the ones that see what is needed and what is not needed. “What I think for me is more important is the equity of the law and whether or not we’re able to distribute these thin...

Ex-minister Attacks Oshiomhole for Endorsing Lawan, Gbajabiamila

Former Minister of Sports, Bala Ka’oje, has faulted the endorsement of certain individuals for juicy positions in the ninth National Assembly by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole. According to Kaoje, an APC chieftain from Kebbi state, the ruling party under Oshiomhole ought to have zoned the positions to regions and not to individuals. In an interview with Leadership newspaper, the ex-Minister said: “I advised that we should zone National Assembly positions as quickly as possible to regions. If you zoned the office of the Senate president to the northeastern states for example, there is nothing wrong in nominating three people and forwarding their names to the zone for them to select one person. “All we heard was that th...
