Squirrels Given Iwobi’s Treatment As CAF Moves Tie With Sierra Leone To June

Three days after Benin Republic played what many fans see as ‘a fast one’ on the Super Eagles by declaring Alex Iwobi COVID-19 positive before the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Porto Novo, the Squirrels were served the same dish in Freetown when tested and declared five of their players COVID-19 positive ahead of their botched final AFCON qualifier. With five of their best players screened out of the game, the Squirrels protested and refused to play the game. Rows over COVID-19 tests have plagued African football since last year, with host national teams and clubs accused of producing false-positive results to deprive opponents of stars. Iwobi was prevented from playing against the Squirrels in Porto Novo, a match the Super Eagles won 1-0, no thanks to Paul Onuachu’s last...

Nigeria vs Lesotho: Iwobi’s COVID-19 Test Result Fake – Rohr

The COVID-19 test result that prevented Everton midfielder, Alex Iwobi from participating in the African Cup of Nations qualifying game against Benin Republic on Saturday is fake, according to Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr. Rohr said that the midfielder will be fielded against Lesotho on Tuesday in the last match of the AFCON qualifiers. Recall that Nigeria booked their place in Cameroon even before the kick off of the match against Benin Republic on Saturday following the goalless draw in an earlier game between Lesotho and Sierra Leone. Iwobi, who was listed in Rohr’s XI for the game against Squirrels was withdrawn before filing out after he was said to have tested positive for COVID-19. And on Monday, Colin Udoh, ESPN journalist, tweeted that, “Gernot Rohr has...

Benin Republic vs Nigeria: Onuachu’s late Header Seals Super Eagles Win

Nigeria ended Benin Republic’s eight-year unbeaten run at home, when they completed the double over their West African rivals, in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series. Paul Onuachu’s late header clinched a 1-0 win in Porto Novo on Saturday. The Super Eagles had come from a goal down last year to beat the Squirrels 2-1. However, away from home, Gernot Rohr’s men found it tough, until the final moments of the game. The three-time African champions had already qualified for the tournament before kick-off, thanks to Lesotho’s goalless draw with Sierra Leone earlier in the day. With one round of fixtures left, Nigeria lead Group with 11 points, four more than Benin. Sierra Leone have four points, while Lesotho are bottom with three. The Eagles host Lesotho i...

Super Eagles Qualify for AFCON 2022

Nigeria have confirmed their place at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, even before the kick off of their game against Benin Republic in Porto Novo. This follows a goalless draw between Lesotho and Sierra Leone in the early kick-off in Group L. The result means Lesotho can no longer qualify for next year’s tournament in Cameroon. It also means Sierra Leone cannot match the Super Eagles’ current tally of eight points. The Leone Stars now have four points after four matches, while their hosts have three, with one round of fixtures left. Gernot Rohr’s men take on the Squirrels by 5pm West African Time. The three-time African champions are now fighting to finish top of the group.

Okoye manned the posts, when Nigeria threw away a four-goal lead to draw 4-4 against Sierra Leone in Benin City last November. He then kept a clean sheet during the second leg which ended 0-0 four days later in Freetown. “I’m looking forward to the game because I’m always honoured to represent my country and I’m trying to help the team and to get the win of course. “We can understand the disappointment from the last two matches against Sierra Leone, but we are going to work hard to six points in those two games,” Okoye told journalists on Tuesday. ‘Ghost’ Human Ancestor Discovered In West Africa. Linked To Yoruba, Esan People

A mysterious "ghost population" of now-extinct ancient human-like creatures may have interbred with early humans living in West Africa, scientists say. Researchers suggest DNA from this group makes up between 2% and 19% of modern West Africans' genetic ancestry. They believe the interbreeding occurred about 43,000 years ago. Scientists found links to the Mende people of Sierra Leone, Yoruba as well as Esan people in Nigeria, plus other groups in western areas of The Gambia. The new study was published in Science Advances this week. It suggests that ancestors of modern West Africans interbred with a yet-undiscovered species of archaic human, similar to how ancient Europeans mated with Neanderthals, and Oceanic populations with Denisovans.
