It is not expected to have this distance for eight and nine, but Liverpool play one game less. “But it is 54 points. In December, no one is champion. We are going to lose games. Bednarek settles thriller as West Ham slump continues

West Ham's recent Premier League slump continued as they fell to a 3-2 home defeat to Southampton at the London Stadium. Saints took the lead after only eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi finished from the edge of the penalty area. Michail Antonio levelled three minutes after coming on at half-time but James Ward-Prowse restored Southampton's lead from the penalty spot (61). Said Benrahma hooked in a second equaliser for the Hammers (64) but Jan Bednarek rose to glance home from Ward-Prowse's free-kick to establish a lead for a third time for Southampton which they would not relinquish. The result means the Hammers have only won one of their last seven league games as they slipped below Tottenham into sixth place while a first win in seven matches for Southampton moves...

Arsenal brush off Aubameyang Absence to Beat Saints

Arsenal brushed off the absence of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory over Southampton at Emirates Stadium. Before the game, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta revealed his captain had been dropped from the squad for a 'disciplinary breach', but after a poor start to the game it was Arsenal's stand-in captain on the day, Alexandre Lacazette, who gave the Gunners the lead in the 21st minute. The hosts doubled their advantage six minutes later when Martin Odegaard scored his third goal in as many Premier League matches before Gabriel Magalhaes, who was denied a goal by VAR moments earlier, capped a good afternoon on the field for Arsenal. Mertesacker said this while speaking at the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust Christmas Event ahead of their Premier League with Southampton on Saturday. According to him, Balogun, who is considered one of the most promising talents to emerge from Arsenal’s youth system in recent times, would ‘likely’ leave Emirates on a temporary basis in a bid to get regular playing time. Outstanding Liverpool hit Saints for four to move second

Liverpool moved second in the Premier League - for 24 hours at least - as they strolled past Southampton with a commanding 4-0 win at Anfield. Liverpool were unapologetic in their style of play, giving Saints chances but never once relenting in their own attacking endeavours, blitzing their opponents in the first half. They went ahead inside 97 seconds through Diogo Jota, converting Andrew Robertson's low cross for the fastest Premier League goal of the season. Jota got his second with another close-range finish, this time from Mo Salah's centre (32), and Thiago put the game beyond Saints' reach before the break as his left-footed drive deflected off Lyanco and into the net (37), his second goal in as many games. Ramsey spent 11 years on Arsenal's books before leaving the club at the end of his last contract in 2019, with Juve subsequently snapping him up on a free transfer. The Welshman has since struggled to live up to expectations in Turin and is being tipped to leave the club in January after making just five appearances for the Bianconeri at the start of the 2021-22 campaign.

Southampton took the lead for the first time in the game when Ibrahima Diallo intercepted James Tarkowski's poor ball forward and released Armando Broja, who raced through before finding the bottom corner with his second goal in as many games. However, perhaps the biggest marker of how much Mohammed Salisu has come on since his move to Southampton in the summer of 2020 is the fact that the Catalan side, according to Los Fichajes, have earmarked him as a replacement for none other than Gerard Pique.
