A former Southampton midfielder, Alan McLoughlin, is dead. He passed away at the age of 54. Southampton made the announcement in a tweet via its Twitter handle on Tuesday. “#SaintsFC is saddened to learn of the passing of former midfielder Alan McLoughlin, aged 54. “Our thoughts are with Alan’s family and loved ones,” Southampton’s tweet read. McLoughlin represented the Republic of Ireland national team 42 times. He also played for Swindon, Portsmouth, Wigan and Rochdale, among other clubs, during his football career. McLoughlin scored the goal that took the Republic of Ireland to the 1994 World Cup when he scored in a qualifier against Northern Ireland at Windsor Park in Belfast.
