Stoke City boss O’Neill banking on Mikel’s experience for 2020-21 Championship campaign

The Potters fortified their team with the former Nigeria international in the summer in their quest to return to the English top-flight Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill is hoping John Obi Mikel will bring his experience to bear when the 2020-21 Championship campaign gets underway. The 33-year-old teamed up with the Bet365 Stadium outfit in August as a free agent after mutually parting ways with Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor. The former Nigeria captain made his name while playing for Chelsea, where he spent 11 years and won a number of accolades including the Champions League, Premier League and Europa League titles, among others.

Manchester United had to cancel a friendly game against Stoke City on Tuesday, after one of the players from the Championship club tested positive for COVID-19. Stoke’s players were taken to a separate building at Carrington when they arrived. They were given the results of Monday’s tests shortly before the friendly, when they were informed one of their players had tested positive. Benik Afobe aiming to score 45 goals at Bristol City

Stoke leave eight players out of preseason tour

Stoke City have left eight players out of their pre-season squad for the Netherlands tour. Sky Sports News reports that Moritz Bauer, Geoff Cameron, Mame Biram Diouf, Giannelli Imbula, Julien Ngoy, Erik Pieters, Kevin Wimmer and Bojan are among the first team players not going on the trip. Boss Nathan Jones has left players at home who he does not see as being part of his plans for next season. Some players are the ones who want to move on, while others may be surplus to requirements as the club tries to build a promotion-worthy squad. Stoke have made a flurry of new signings this summer, signing six players last week! The Championship side will begin their pre-season preparations against MSV Duisburg on July 13.

DONE DEAL: Stoke Conclude Loan Move For Everton Defender Martina

Stroke City have signed Everton defender Cuco Martina on a season-long loan. The 28-year-old Curacao international featured 28 times for the Toffees last season after completing a free transfer from Southampton. "Cuco adds size, strength and power to our back line," said Stoke boss Gary Rowett on the club website.
