MTN customers in Nigeria now have alternative electronic payment platforms to recharge their phones as the mobile network operator on Saturday announced that customers can recharge airtime through payment solutions platforms such as Flutterwave, Jumia Pay, OPay, Kuda, Carbon and BillsnPay for customers to recharge virtually. 12.3m Subscribers Await SIM Linkage With NIN

About 12.3 million active SIM cards are yet to be linked with their owners’ National Identity Numbers (NINs). This is as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed on Tuesday that a total of 47.8m phone users had supplied their NINs to telecom operators. It was learnt that the over 12 million SIM cards were pending because most of the users do not have the national identity numbers. There is an average of three to four SIMs per telecom subscriber in the country, according to the NCC. This means about 191.2m active SIM cards have so far been linked to their owners’ unique identity numbers. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has disclosed that active telecommunication subscribers reduced from 152,467,198 in March, 2017 to 149,249,510 in the month of April. The telecommunications industry regulator made this known in its Monthly Subscriber/Operator Data obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos. It said that the active telecommunications service customers declined by 3,217,688 in April, as against 152,467,198 in March, 2017. This was revealed in the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) report covering the first three months of year 2017. According to him, Nigerian subscribers spent $5.6 billion in 2015 and $6.6 billion in 2016, amounting to $12.2 billion (N3.6trn) on telecommunications services at an average exchange rate of N300. Etisalat May Leave Nigeria Over $1.2bn Loan Default

  Abu Dhabi telecoms group, Etisalat, may sell its stake in Etisalat Nigeria, which has defaulted on a $1.2bn loan, but wants the company’s debt restructured before it does so, Reuters quoted two sources as informing it on Monday. The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Communications Commission on Friday agreed with local banks to pursue a default deal rather than a receivership for Etisalat Nigeria so as not to deter investors and to avoid a wider debt crisis. Etisalat is due to meet with creditors on Tuesday (today) or Wednesday to discuss the default, the sources said.
