CAF confirms dates for 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the dates for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The tournament which will be hosted in Côte d’Ivoire is scheduled to kick off on June 23 and end on July 23, with 24 countries vying for the coveted silverware. Chelsea vs Liverpool: Mane’s foul on Azpilicueta was red card – Edouard Mendy

Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy has said that his Senegal international teammate, Sadio Mane should have been sent off during both teams’ Premier League 2-2 draw on Sunday. Mane caught Cesar Azpilicueta with an elbow in just six seconds during the encounter at Stamford Bridge. The Reds forward only got a yellow card after his arm caught Azpilicueta in the face while he was challenging for the ball in the air. But the result may have been completely different had Mane seen red so early in the game. Mendy was asked for his opinion after the game on whether Mane should have been given his marching orders. The shot-stopper told RMC Sport: “Sadio is my brother, my compatriot. But he should not have stayed on the pitch after one minute.” Meanwhile, just hours after Mane sco...

Redknapp names one player that’ll help Chelsea win title this season

Former Liverpool star, Jamie Redknapp has insisted that Romelu Lukaku is key to Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes this season. He also believes that the Belgian ‘singlehandedly’ dragged the Blues back into the title race on Boxing Day after the striker came off the bench to help the Blues beat Aston Villa 3-1. Reece James’ own goal had put the home side in front but the Blues went into the break on equal terms thanks to Jorginho’s 34th-minute penalty. But Lukaku came on after the break to score the second for the west London side when he found space and headed past Emiliano Martinez in the 56th minute. The Belgian was then brought down by Ezri Konsa inside the box allowing Jorginho to step up again to score his second from the spot. The win mean that Chelsea are now lev...

Barcelona give Koeman three matches to save his job

Barcelona manager, Ronald Koeman, is on the brink of losing his job and has been given three games to turn around the situation, according to the UK Mirror. The Blaugrana were thrashed 3-0 by Bayern Munich in their opening Champions League group game on Tuesday night. The LaLiga side failed to muster a shot on target in all 90 minutes of the match. It was a result and performance that increased the pressure on Koeman. Barca will play three league fixtures within a week – with a trip to Cadiz sandwiched between home games against Granada and Levante respectively. All three opponents are teams that are expected to finish in the lower half of the Spanish top flight this campaign. It is claimed that if Barca slip up in any of those matches, then the board will have a decision...

Ex-England midfielder, Joe Cole has tipped his former club, Chelsea to win the Champions League this season. Cole, speaking with SportsMail, also said he expects at least two Premier League clubs to reach the semi-finals of the competition. Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City are flying England’s flag this year. “I would be stunned if we don’t get at least two teams in the semi-finals, possibly three and maybe even four. “I just think we are so much stronger than the other leagues,” Cole said. When asked which of the English teams could lift the trophy next May, he added: “It’s so hard. If you want me to make a prediction, then Chelsea (to win it). But that’s more out of loyalty. “Any of the four teams can beat anyone else and we’ve g...

The West Africans were involved in English second-tier competition but failed to inspire their teams to victory Nigeria midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru played a crucial role in helping Reading claim a 3-3 draw in an EFL Championship match against QPR on Saturday. The 21-year-old midfielder played the entire game as his team recovered from a slow start to get a point at home. The icing on the cake was his assist in the 64th minute that gave the home team a deserved lead. The scoring opened when Michael Morrison turned the ball into his own net after just 11 minutes to give the visitors an advantage. John Swift then completed an Allen Halilovic pass to bring the teams back to level terms.

One of the best – Cape Verde coach reacts to 2-1 defeat to Nigeria

Cape Verde head coach, Pedro ‘Bubista’ Leitão, has admitted they lost to one of the best teams in Africa, following their 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday. The hosts took a shock lead through Bryan Tavares, but the Super Eagles levelled after Victor Osimhen reacted quickest to a loose ball. Gernot Rohr’s men then won the game thanks to a bizarre own goal midway through the second half. “Cape Verde doesn’t have to feel squeamish about losing to Nigeria. “Nigeria is one of the best teams in Africa. We have to have the guts and humility to know that Nigeria is also an extremely strong team and losing to Nigeria is not a bad thing. “An own goal is always difficult. It was a shame because it happened at a time when we were taking over the game, w...

Cape Verde vs Nigeria: Rohr confirms departure of some Super Eagles from camp

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has confirmed that members of his squad who play in the UK have left for their clubs. This is because of the UK government’s strict regulations on Red List countries, with Nigeria travelling to Cape Verde for their next World Cup qualifier. Rohr’s men began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Liberia on Friday, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. The German is now expecting a more difficult encounter in four days time. “We knew some of our players have to leave after the match and they had to do well before leaving because they cannot go to Cape Verde. “We scored our two goals in the first half and we were calm and played our football. “But under difficult conditions, because after the rain, the pitch was not easy to p...

2022 W/Cup qualifiers:’We cannot spend one and half hour from the hotel to the stadium, we need better escorts’- Gernot Rohr complains

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr is not happy that Lagos was chosen as venue of his team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier group opener against Liberia this week. Nigeria will host Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos and Rohr says the pitch and traffic situation might make his players not achieve desired target of a win. “We are happy to play in Lagos but there are two things that must be better. The first thing is for the traffic, we cannot spend one and half hour from the hotel to the stadium. It’s too long,” Rohr told Elegbete TV. “We need better escorts, we need better organization and the roads are full. This is one problem. The other problem is infrastructure, they had a good work on it but it’s not yet on a higher international level. “Our player...

Klopp kicks against ‘double punishment’ after Chelsea red card in 1-1 draw

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has said the red card shown to Chelsea defender, Reece James, during the club’s 1-1 draw on Saturday, took away the chance to see an exciting second half between the two teams. Referee Anthony Taylor sent off James following a review of a goal-line clearance. Taylor also awarded a penalty which Mohamed Salah converted to cancel out Kai Havertz’s opener. While Klopp felt it was a clear handball, he said the double punishment of a red card, as well as a penalty, had spoilt the game. He said: “I never liked double punishment, but if somebody ever listened to me about rule changes or rules, a lot of things would look completely different. “It was absolutely harsh. Spoils the game? Yeah probably. It changed everything, I liked our first half, we...

Ex-Arsenal star Wilshere: How do I explain to my kids that no one wants me?

Once tipped to become a world-class midfielder for the future, the free agent has no offers on the table despite being 29 and fully fit Jack Wilshere has further opened up on his struggles to find a new club, with the former Arsenal star admitting that he is at a loss as to why no teams have moved to sign him. The midfielder spent time at both West Ham and Bournemouth after leaving the Gunners in 2018, but failed to work his way into either of the sides' long-term plans. Now, with 34 England caps to his name and still just 29 years old, the free agent is finding it difficult to understand why he isn't attracting any interest.
