The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development led by Sunday Dare, has denied allegations its officials diverted funds meant to be paid as salary and allowances for Nigeria's Women's Basketball team, D'Tigres, saying the money is safe with the Central Bank Of Nigeria. The denial by the sports ministry comes after The D'Tigress team players released a video alleging they have been owed close to $200,000 from as far back as 2018 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The team players in the video said they won't play any other match for the national team including the FIBA world cup qualifiers until their outstanding allowances are paid to them. Nigeria failed to qualify for the final after finishing last in the semi-final first heat of the 4×400 mixed relay at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The country was represented by Ifeanyi Emmanuel Ojeli, Imaobong Nse Uko, Samson Oghenewegba Nathaniel and Patience Okon George. Though they finished last, the quartet ran a new African Record of 3:13.60 while Team USA and Dominica got disqualified. During the race, Nigeria deployed the male-female-male-female strategy while other countries used male-female-female-male. Ojeli took the first leg, Uko second and the third leg was taken by Nathaniel, who opened up a gap of over 100 metres against other female runners. AFN appoints new anti-doping Commission head after Olympics ban

After the disqualification of 10 Nigerian athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by the Athletics Integrity Unit over their inability to meet anti-doping requirements, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has announced the appointment of Professor Ken Anugweje as head of the Medical and Anti- Doping Commission of the federation. Anugweje’s appointment was announced in a statement by AFN President Tonobok Okowa on Thursday. Okowa said Anugweje’s appointment was to prevent any future occurrences. Ten Nigerian athletes have been disqualified from participating in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This was contained in a statement in a statement from the Athletics Integrity Unit obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday. The Athletics Integrity Unit is an independent body created by World Athletics that manages all integrity issues – both doping and non-doping.
