Lagos Government Places 14 Countries on COVID-19 Watchlist

  The Lagos state government has placed 14 countries on its COVID-19 watchlist to curb the spread of the disease in the state. The state commissioner for health, Akin Abayomi made the announcement on Wednesday May 12. Abayomi who explained that travellers coming from other countries into Lagos have been classified into three groups — the red countries, the amber countries, and the green countries, added that the state government is outlining measures that will guide the management of inbound passengers of interest (POIs) from other countries. The red countries are India, Brazil and Turkey where new variants of COVID-19 are causing an increase in infection rate. A 47-year-old drug trafficker, Chigbogu Ernest Obiora, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. A Nigerian man, identified as Kingsley, and two women from Uganda have been arrested with nine kilograms of narcotics in India. The country's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) busted the smuggling network, according to a report by Outlook. The women, Jascent Nakalungi and Sharifah Namaganda said to be cousins, were intercepted by the Delhi unit of the central probe agency on January 28 after they landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in India. Police in Kampala, Uganda have detained a yet-to-be-identified Nigerian on allegations of holding hostage three female students of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) for over 10 hours. Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, said on Saturday the suspect invited his Ugandan girlfriend, who he met less than a week ago to his home in Mutungo, Nakawa Division, in Kampala. She reportedly visited along with two other female friends, according to a report by Uganda’s Daily Monitor. Mr Enanga said around 9pm, the students told him they wanted to leave but he insisted that they stay around. A Ugandan court on Tuesday charged pop star turned leading opposition figure Bobi Wine with "annoying" President Yoweri Museveni, his lawyer told AFP. The singer, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, appeared in court on a prior treason charge after he and other opposition politicians allegedly stoned Museveni's convoy during a campaign rally in August last year.
