The CAN President noted, “We are already in the hands of the enemies because of our corrupt and sinful life. We are in pains of insecurity, inflation, unemployment, poverty is stirring many people in the face. Kidnappers and bandits do not allow us to rest.” He added that for the past years, bad and selfish leadership in...

Unemployment: What Tinubu’s Recommendation Tells Us About Him – Oke Umurhohwo

Having carefully designed his birthday colloquium to project his presidential aspiration and offer himself as the most suitable choice to succeed Buhari, Bola Tinubu stepped to the podium on Monday and set off a big debate on his capacity for the job he will be seeking in a few months time. Turn to any of the commonly used social media platforms, and you will most certainly notice Nigerians debating the proposition. So, what did Tinubu proposed and why is it generating reaction? Uncomfortable with the country’s unemployment figure and the implication on security, Tinubu proposed that young Nigerians should be massively recruited into the military. That is, draft 50 million youth to the military to cut off potential recruitment sources for terrorists and other criminal activities. ...

Nigeria To Become The Country With The Highest Jobless Rate – Bloomberg

Nigeria, home to the world’s largest number of extremely poor people, looks set to break another record: the highest jobless rate. A third of the labor force is without employment or working only a few hours a week — second only to Namibia in the list of 82 countries tracked by Bloomberg. That’s just one of Nigeria’s economic challenges. The country has had two recessions in the last five years, inflation is at a near four-year high, insecurity in the north of the country is rife and getting worse and attempts to diversify the economy away from oil have largely failed. That’s a problem in a world moving inexorably away from fossil fuels. For now, the jobless rate is possibly President Muhammadu Buhari’s biggest problem. Unemployment has more than quadrupled over five yea...

$1.5 Billion To Renovate The Port Harcourt Refinery Is Suspicious – Atiku

That Nigeria’s economy is in dire straits is a fact well known both to the nation and to our international partners. Unemployment has just reached an all-time high of 33%, while inflation has hit another record high of 17%. At this critical period, we must as a nation be prudent with the use of whatever revenue we can generate, and even if we must borrow, we must do so with the utmost responsibility and discipline. To therefore budget the sum of $1.5 billion to renovate or turn around the Port Harcourt Refinery would appear to be an unwise use of scarce funds at this critical juncture for an assortment of reasons. First of all, our refineries have been loss-making for multiple years, and indeed, it is questionable wisdom to throw good money after bad. At other times, I have co...

Dino Melaye Slams Efcc Over Investigation Of Wealth

Being over concerned with the way things are going in our country Nigeria, the senator directs a question to the EFCC over the investigation of people's wealth, while the masses were poor looking for money no one investigated the source of their poverty so why investigate the source of his wealth, because if that becomes a factor then it simply means the government that it's not even ready to help the rate of unemployment in Nigeria is now against people becoming wealthy. He said, “what is wrong with people, you make money they'll want to investigate the source of your wealth, when they were poor, did they investigate the source of their poverty ”.   View this post on Instagram   ?????? Bloomberg Compares Nigeria 2014 And 2018 Hard Data

Nigeria is a much more important country than most people in the U.S. probably realize. With more than 190 million people, it’s Africa’s largest country by far (Ethiopia, the second-largest, has a little more than half as many). And with a fertility rate of about 5.5 children per woman, among the world’s highest, Nigeria is only going to grow in importance — by the century’s end, the country is projected to have almost 800 million people, almost twice as many as the U.S. by then. But as things stand, this African giant is failing to create the prosperity that will sustain that future population. Its oil-dependent economy has struggled after oil prices plunged five years ago. The number of Nigerians in extreme poverty — generally defined as living on less than $1.90 a day — is estimated ...

UK Emphasis on What Buhari govt should fix urgently

The United Kingdom on Tuesday advised the Buhari government to improve the investment climate to attract more investors to Nigeria. UK Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said this at a meeting with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, during the first Nigeria-UK Economic Development Forum (EDF), hosted by the Federal Government at the Presidential Villa. The EDF was signed in August 2018 by President Muhammadu Buhari and Prime Minister Theresa May in London as a platform to foster economic and development ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He noted that Nigeria’s current demographics require government and other stakeholders to improve efforts and other interventions aimed at tackling unemployment and other challenges. Hunt advised the government to adopt steps aimed at improvi...

We Will Get 5m Youth Off The Streets If We Sell Some Of Our Cars – Sen. Andrew Uchendu

Andrew Uchendu, senator representing Rivers east, has asked his colleagues to sell some of their cars and use the proceeds to empower unemployed youth in the country. He made the point while contributing to a debate at the senate on Thursday. Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central, had drawn the attention of his colleagues to the killing of Faye Mooney, a British tourist, and Matthew Oguche, her partner, at Kajuru Castle in Kaduna state. In his contribution, Uchendu said unemployment was fueling insecurity. On the suggestion of his colleagues putting up their car for sale, Uchendu said proceeds from this could be used to establish factories that can take over five million jobless youth off the streets. “We own three, four, five vehicles and I’m sure we can do mu...

Embrace Carpentry, Plumbing – Labour Minister, Ngige Tells Nigerians

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has advised Nigerians to carpentry, plumbing, and not focus only on white collar jobs. Ngige believes Nigeria’s high unemployment rate can be greatly reduced if more Nigerians embrace blue collar jobs that are largely neglected. He made this known during an interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. The Minister noted that the Federal Government has an established vocational skills policy, but that Nigerians think blue collar jobs are beneath their status. He said; "It (unemployment) was an issue and that was why we did an advocacy and told people not to look at only the white collar jobs. There are blue collar jobs. Skills. You have to train your hands. You have to do plumbing, carpentry, tailoring. “...

Steve Hanke: Nigeria Ranked Sixth Most Miserable Country In The World

An economist from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, US, Steve Hanke, has ranked Nigeria as the sixth most miserable country in the world. The ranking is titled, Hanke’s Annual Misery Index 2018: The World’s Saddest (And Happiest) Countries. Writing in the Forbes magazine of March 28, the economist notes that Misery Index is calculated using economic indices such as unemployment, inflation and the rates banks charge on loans. “In the sphere of economics, misery tends to flow from high inflation, steep borrowing costs and unemployment,” Hanke warns. The Index notes that the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria contributes largely to its unflattering rating on the Misery Index. Hanke, in his explanatory note wrote, “The original Misery Index was just a simple sum of a nat...
