Kano Hisbah Invades University Hostels Arrests Male, Female Students In Same Room

Officials of Hisbah in Kano state have invaded some off-campus hostels of the Bayero University in Kano, arresting students of the opposite sex found in the same room. SaharaReporters gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday night at Danbare, a small community directly opposite the university’s gate. It was learnt that the Islamic police broke into the students’ rooms and took them to their office. Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Dr Paul Kwame Butakor, the two University of Ghana lecturers exposed for allegedly asking students for sex in exchange for grades in a documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), have been exonerated by a fact-finding committee set up by the university. According to the fact-finding committee, the lecturers were cleared of any act of sexual misconduct because there is no evidence that they breached the university’s policy on sexual harassment. The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has denied media reports that a final year student of the Department of English, Grace Opeyemi Dara, committed suicide because of her poor grades.   Grace reportedly drank Sniper and died on August 2nd.   The spokesman of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement released on Monday August 5th, said Dara’s academic record was not bad to warrant her committing suicide.
