CBN Orders Banks, Forex Dealers to accept Old, Lower Dollar notes or Face Sanctions

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ordered commerical banks and authorised foreign exchange (forex) dealers to henceforth accept both old series and lower denominations of the US dollars for deposit from customers. In a circular by the CBN's Director of Currency Operations Department, Ahmed  Umar, to all deposit money banks (DMBs), Bureau De Change (BDC) operators and the general public on Tuesday April 20, the apex bank threatened to sanction any banks or forex dealers who refuse to comply with the order. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the amendment of procedures for receipt of diaspora remittances in an apparent and frantic attempt to improve liquidity in the forex market and reduce the disparity between the black market and official I&E window. This disclosure was made in a circular issued by the CBN on Monday, November 30, 2020, to all authorized dealers and the general public and signed by its Director for Trade and Exchange Department, Dr O.S. Police in Zimbabwe have arrested three Chinese men and at least 16 locals for illegal currency deals. The arrests come a week after President Robert Mugabe’s government tightened rules to impose heavy jail sentences or fines on offenders and seize their cash. At least $50 000 in local bond notes was seized from the three Chinese nationals after police were tipped off, the state-run Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) reported on Wednesday.
