Surgeries Postponed After 4-Day Water Scarcity At University College Hospital, Ibadan

A scarcity of water at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan since last Saturday is causing the postponement of some surgeries, FIJ can report. According to a source, the officials claim the water scarcity is due to some ongoing major repairs within the hospital, but the problem is now affecting patients’ access to healthcare. In fact, surgeries are currently being postponed as a result of this development. “I was supposed to be in theatre this week but the surgery has now been postponed by two days because of this water crisis,” a patient told FIJ. “It is so bad that patients now buy sachets of water to bathe and defecate.” Water crises in UCH are frequent occurrences, although they happen in parts of the hospital rather than the whole. Residents forced to fetch water from streams as water scarcity causes a keg of water to sell for 250 Naira

The FCT Water Board had last week appealed to residents to persevere pending when repair and maintenance work are carried out on the Usama Dam Treatment Plant. Reacting to the water scarcity, Omoyele Sowore quoted the late Fela Kuti's song, Original Suffer Head.   Below are photos showing what residents have to pass through to get water.   ...

Water Scarcity In Enugu: Long Queues Sighted In Most Parts Of The State

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who monitored the situation in Enugu on Thursday, reported that the worst hit were residents of Independence Layout, Community Layout in Transekulu, Achara Layout and Emene. Some of the residents told NAN that they had not had water since the New Year, adding that they had been at the mercy of water vendors. Pat Chukwuma, who lives at Independence Layout, told NAN she has been buying water from vendors since she moved into the layout nine years ago. “Ever since I moved into this area, we only had tap water twice in 2014 but from then till now, I buy water from vendors at a very costly amount, between N18,000 and N20,000. “Again, we cannot do borehole due to the topography of Enugu which is covered by coal,” she said.
