The revelation came yesterday as the Nobel laureate gave a rare insight into the high-stake lobbying and negotiations that preceded the PDP’s presidential primaries in which Atiku was highly favoured to win at the expense of his then boss Obasanjo. Soyinka was replying a question at a special reading session to mark the presentation of his latest book, “Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?: Gani’s Unfinished Business”, at the Freedom Park, Lagos. Speaking at the event, Mr. Louis Odion, one-time Edo State Information Commissioner and The Nation columnist, asked the liter...

Obasanjo Ambushes Wole Soyinka On Olumo Rock

This is a melodramatic opinion piece by Tunde Odesola about the strained relationship between Olusegun Obasanjo and Professor Wole Soyinka. Humanity oscillates between extreme opposites; darkness paints the beauty of light; fear skirts the periphery of bravery; ugliness envies beauty; falsehood stalks truth, death ambushes life; good wrestles evil; all in an everlasting tussle. And science cements this eternal truth into reality, combining negative and positive poles to produce light. The ubiquitous beauty of social media is also its blight. Social media, a nonphysical marketplace of ideas where information is served online among human communes, is a bittersweet leveler. It’s the color-blind arena where the walls of difference separating the rich and the poor; the young and the old...

Wole Soyinka Blasts Obasanjo In New Book, Says ‘I Dare You To Meet Me One-On-One’

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo to desist from struggling to restore Nigeria to the path of sanity and moderate rectitude, describing him as ‘objectively unfitted’ for the role. He urged him to instead head for a monastery. Soyinka said, “…I know that deep inside, there is a soakaway pond of personal insecurity struggling to be drained. Beneath every bully, there is a scared product of insecurity and troubled conscience. Now, fight your own demons as best as you can, and feel free to flagellate Buhari (President Muhammadu) with all the weapons in your armoury. I have only one demand: keep away from movements struggling to restore this nation to the path of sanity and even moderate rectitude. End your hijacking propensity.’’ ...

Make Killer Herdsmen Pay For Their Crimes – Wole Soyinka Tells President Buhari

Playwright, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to make killer herdsmen pay for their crimes. He said this would send a strong warning that the Buhari administration would not tolerate forceful land seizure anywhere in Nigeria. Soyinka stated this in a statement on Wednesday, titled “On demand: A language of non-capitulation, non-appeasement.’ The Nobel laureate said that Buhari’s claim that it was unjust for the public to accuse him of being silent on the killer herdsmen’s activities was based on Nigerians’ observation of his “erstwhile language of complacency and accommodativeness in the face of unmerited brutalisation.’’ He added that Buhari had yet to speak in the language that the “murdering herdsmen” understand by exhibiting that forceful seizure of land woul...

Writer, Odega Shawa, Slams Gumsu Abacha For Insulting Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka

Last week, Gumsu took to her Facebook page to insult Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, who at the democracy day investiture on June 12th, questioned President Buhari's loyalty to her late father, military dictator, Sani Abacha. Soyinka said Buhari cannot be applauding Abiola and in the same vein be speaking good of Abacha who brought so much hardship on Nigerians. Writer, Odega Shawa in an open letter to Gumsu, slammed her for disrespecting Soyinka. Read below DEAR SAGESSE GUMSU SANI ABACHA, YOUR FATHER WAS A CRAZY MONSTER TOO Hajia SGSA, as-salaam alaikum. Peace be unto you and your house. I read your Facebook post where you slammed Professor Wole Soyinka for allegedly insinuating insult on the memory of your late father, Gen Sani Abacha, by questioning President Buhari’s double d...

‘If I Ever Join Obasanjo’s Movement, Get A Psychiatrist To Examine Me’ – Wole Soyinka

Nobel laureate, professor Wole Soyinka says he should be examined by a psychiatrist if he ever joins the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) led by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. Speaking in an interview with BBC Yoruba, Soyinka said the Obasanjo led coalition is not meant for someone like him. “Me? Obasanjo would establish a group and I will become a member of such group? That means they should get a psychiatrist to examine me,” Soyinka said. He also spoke about the letters which Obasanjo and former military President Ibrahim Babangida addressed to Buhari saying people should get suspicious “when these soldiers speak” because there is the possibility that “what they have in mind is different from what we have in mind”. “When these soldiers begin to speak, we are supposed to get...

Soyinka’s New Year Message: It’s Your Struggle Now, By Akin Adesokan

The harsh truth is also the opportunistic perspective of the champions of a carrier culture psychologically unwilling to hold itself to account. We might be lucky to have Soyinka the culture-hero, one of those rare gifts nature brought to us. We would be luckier, though, if we roused ourselves to the recognition that sentient beings like him are warning signs that we take control of our fate. In the final chapter of You Must Set Forth At Dawn, the fulsome account of his leading role in the struggle against the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha, the Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka constructs a detailed narrative of his return to Nigeria in 1998, following the tyrannical soldier’s death. Focusing on the manner that the crowd of admirers received him at the Lagos airport, he writes of...

Fuel Scarcity: Stop Buying Time, Passing Blame – Wole Soyinka Tells Federal Govt

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called on the Federal Government to end the current fuel scarcity in the country rather than buying time and passing blame. Soyinka stated this on Saturday in a statement titled, “Blame passing: The New Year Gift to a Nation.’’ He also cited the clipping of the 1977 edition of the Daily Times when President Muhammadu Buhari, then a minister of petroleum and natural resources, was quoted as saying, “Fuel crisis may be over next year.” Soyinka said, “I recently ran the gauntlet of petroleum queues through three conveniently situated cities – Lagos, Abeokuta and Ibadan – deliberately, this Friday. Even with ‘unorthodox’ aids of passage, this was no task for the faint-hearted. Just getting past fueling stations was traumatising, an obstacle race...

Nigeria Turns The Page On Literary Past

Lagos - Mention Nigerian literature and the first names likely to spring to mind are Chinua Achebe, the author of "Things Fall Apart", or the venerable Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka. But Africa's most populous nation has a new crop of writers whose work is a far cry from the post-colonial era of their esteemed predecessors. Olumide Popoola's novel "When We Speak Of Nothing", for example, tells the story of a gay teenager seeking the father he never knew in the southern oil city of Port Harcourt. The book, which was published earlier this year, is written in a language mixing African pidgin with London slang, and includes comical descriptions and textspeak. For Emeka Nwankwo, from Nigerian publisher Cassava Republic, breaking conventions and expectations about literature i...

According to him; What does it take to get you attention? Read below…. “I am very proud of Ebuka Obi Uchendu. Ironically, not entirely for the same reasons he is becoming a serial world record internet breaker. Lol In fact the contrast between both the reasons is the reason I write this. Have you met the young man in person? The air around him leaves him helplessly likeable. Humbly strange for someone who knows many find his look striking. Ebuka is violently intelligent and his sense of humor is hardl...

Wole Soyinka Goes To Trump’s America A Year After ‘Tearing His Green Card”

Professor Wole Soyinka is going back to  Donald Trump’s America, less than a year after he tore his Green Card following the election of Donald Trump as the president. He will be delivering from 14-16  November  the Richard D. Cohen Lectures at Harvard University Centre for African Studies. “I’ll go in as an alien, an alien from outer space. I love that designation,” Soyinka said in an interview with Financial Times of London published on Friday. Before the emergence of Trump, Soyinka had  spent much time in the US, where he taught at a number of universities and lived in California with his wife, Folake. Donald Trump’s election marked an end to his US sojourn. In what has become known among Nigerians as “Wolexit”, he cut up his Green Card. “To have some redneck ride into power on the...
